Fast Start for the Bleu Devils
New Orleans, LA - Dillard University's track and field team had an outstanding performance at the New Orleans Triangular meet, with several senior athletes achieving remarkable results. The team's veterans stepped up and delivered exceptional performances, setting new records and securing their spots in the upcoming NAIA Indoor Championships.
Senior Kaleb McClendon had an exceptional meet, setting a new school record in the 60m with a time of 6.82 seconds. This impressive achievement surpassed the previous record set by Jamaal Morris in 2022. McClendon's time currently ranks him at the top of the NAIA rankings for this early season. Additionally, McClendon showcased his versatility by also excelling in the 200m, where he ran a time of 21.60 seconds, ranking him sixth all-time in Dillard history and second in the NAIA.
Another senior, Jordan Yates, secured his first-ever qualification for the NAIA Indoor Championships by running a time of 8.33 seconds in the 60 hurdles. This outstanding performance not only earned him a spot in the championships but also set a new school record and placed him ninth in the NAIA rankings.
Senior Christopher Watson demonstrated his prowess in the long jump, effortlessly qualifying for his third consecutive indoor championships. Watson's remarkable jump of 7.30m not only ranks him first in the NAIA but also sets a new school record.
Datjuan Harris, another senior athlete, also secured his first qualification for the indoor championships with an impressive triple jump of 14.15m. This jump ranks him second in the NAIA and establishes him as the new school record holder.
Senior Malik Durant showcased his speed and endurance, finishing second overall in the meet with a time of 1:24.55 in the 600m. Durant's time ranks him second all-time, and he is determined to break the school record of 1:24.04.
In the throwing events, senior athletes Nobie Harris and Johnathan Kitchen had outstanding performances. Harris claimed victory in the Weight throw with a distance of 14.04m, setting a new school record. Kitchen also excelled in both the weight throw and shot put, consistently ranking among the top 10 performers.
Coach Legania expressed his delight in the exceptional performances of the team's veterans, stating, "I am extremely happy with the way my veterans stepped up and got the job done. However, no one is satisfied, as there is a bigger prize in sight."
