Bio
Coach Lashaunda Spurgeon enters her third year as the head volleyball coach at Dillard and was hired in March of 2020.
She led Dillard to a 16-7 record and a mark of 10-2 in the GCAC in her first year on the way to being named the GCAC Coach of the Year. She also coached the 2021 Attacker of the Year (Desire Neal), the Setter of the Year (Kamryn Linton) and the Defensive Player of the Year (Chloe Young) along with seeing four of her players capture All-GCAC Honors (Desire Neal - First Team, Kamryn Linton - First Team, Chloe Young - First Team, Codi Fillmore - Second Team, Taylor Hurst - Honorable Mention)

Spurgeon, an Alabama native and former collegiate volleyball player at Stillman College (Alabama), is a seven-year coaching veteran, including two prior seasons as a collegiate head coach at Vernon College (Texas).
“I am humbled to be chosen to lead the Dillard volleyball program and look forward to being a part of the Bleu Devil Family,” Coach Spurgeon explained. “I would like to personally thank Dr. Barnes for this opportunity. With my prior experience and love for the game I am ready to lead this program.”
Spurgeon spent the 2019 season as an assistant coach at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. The Broncos had an impressive campaign in going 19-7, being Southern Division champions, winning the CIAA Tournament and earning a place in the Division II NCAA Tournament n her season with the program. Five of the players that she worked with and mentored earned recognition by the CIAA for post-season awards including the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, four First Team All-Conference selections, a Second Team choice and two members of the All-Rookie Team.
Prior to her time at FSU, Spurgeon served and was promoted into the role of head coach at Vernon College in 2017 after working as the lead assistant since 2014. In her two seasons in charge of the Chaparrals the program went 31-32. The program sported an impressive 107-72 record in Spurgeon’s five total years at Vernon including four runs into the post-season.
In her first season as a collegiate head coach, VC finished the season 17-15 overall and 5-4 in conference play and qualified for the regional tournament and placing fourth overall. Two of her players were honored on the All-Conference Second-Team and one on the First-Team. One student-athlete made the Regional All-Tournament Team as well as the All-Region Academic Team. In 2018, her squad finished the season 14-17 with one student-athlete on the All-Conference First Team and three on the Second-Team.
As the assistant coach at Vernon, the volleyball squad had three successful seasons and she had the opportunity to train a NJCAA All-American. As a member of the staff at Vernon, Spurgeon guided six players to earn First-Team and five Second-Team All-Conference honors. Six of her athletes garnered Academic All-Conference, two were named to the All-Region Tournament Team, one as the conference MVP, Newcomer of the Year, Setter of the Year, and two Defensive Players of the Year.
While working as the assistant coach at Vernon, Spurgeon also worked as the head coach for the 14’s, 15’s, 16’s and 17’s of the W.F. Elite Volleyball Club from 2014-17.
In 2013, following her graduation from Stillman College, Spurgeon was the junior varsity head volleyball coach and assistant varsity coach at Hillcrest High School plus the head volleyball coach for Club Crimson Volleyball in Tuscaloosa and an assistant volleyball coach with the Tigers.
The 2013 Stillman graduate earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. She was a four-year volleyball and track & field student-athlete. Spurgeon was among the top five for the program in service aces, kills, and blocks on the volleyball court and received the leadership and most offensive award in each of her final three seasons as a member of the Tigers. Spurgeon finished her last season ranked second nationally in the NCAA Division II in service aces. On the track in 2011 and 2012, Spurgeon was the SIAC women's javelin champion and 2013 runner-up in the event. She received SIAC Women's First Team All-Conference in 2012 and Second Team honors in 2011 and 2013 while a member of the track program. Spurgeon was also named the Most Outstanding Student-Athlete for women's track for the 2012-13 season.
She is a native of Albertville, Alabama and a former standout in volleyball, basketball, and track & field at Albertville High School with numerous awards including All-Area, All-County, and state qualifier honors.
