Dillard answers Alcorn State rally with timely extra-base hits in 12–8 road win
LORMAN, MS — Dillard University weathered a momentum swing and a midgame surge from Alcorn State, then finished with back-to-back scoring pushes to claim a 12–8 win Tuesday afternoon at Lady Braves Stadium.
The Bleu Devils struck first in a big way, manufacturing five runs in the second inning. Dillard leaned on pressure baseball—drawing three walks, taking advantage of multiple wild pitches and errors, and staying aggressive on the bases—to turn a 1–0 deficit into a 5–1 lead. Even with only two hits in the frame, Dillard's persistence forced Alcorn into mistakes that directly fueled the inning.
Alcorn State responded with a six-run third to take a 6–5 lead, highlighted by a two-run double from P. Thompson and another two-run double from M. Ward. Instead of unraveling, Dillard immediately counterpunched in the fourth: Ashlynn Gaston's RBI fielder's choice tied it, then Grace Hunter delivered an RBI double to put Dillard back in front. Mhallayah Picou followed with a two-run single, pushing the advantage to 9–6 and reestablishing control.
From there, Dillard kept adding on. Ja'Lise Stewart's RBI double in the sixth made it 10–7, and the Bleu Devils tacked on two more in the seventh on Jessica Battiste's RBI double and Hunter's RBI single. Alcorn managed a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Dillard's late innings execution proved decisive.
Offensively, Dillard piled up 14 hits and got production throughout the order. Jessica Battiste went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while Grace Hunter finished 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Mhallayah Picou added two hits and two RBIs, and Ja'Lise Stewart contributed two hits, including an RBI double. At the top, Kyiera Torrence set the tone by going 3-for-4 with a walk.
In the circle, Kylie Price earned the win, working five innings, and Dillard's bullpen helped close it down. Brooklyn Baltzell limited the damage despite traffic, and Mary-Elizabeth Landry delivered a scoreless seventh to finish the game.
Dillard also had to overcome its own miscues—both teams committed three errors—but the Bleu Devils' ability to respond after Alcorn's six-run third and to tack on insurance late underscored a resilient road performance.
