Henderson State capitalizes early; Dillard keeps competing despite tough 9–0 result
NEW ORLEANS– Dillard welcomed Henderson State University to Wesley on Feb. 11, 2026, and while the final score read 9–0 in five innings, the box score shows a game shaped as much by miscues and missed chances as by cleanly-struck balls. Dillard's effort never dipped, and the Bleu Devils continued to battle at the plate and in the circle even as Henderson State made the most of limited opportunities.
The story: runs without many hits
Henderson State scored nine runs on only five hits, a clear indicator that Dillard was forced to defend extended innings created by errors and free baserunners. Dillard committed five errors, and Henderson State also drew six walks and added aggressive baserunning—most notably three stolen bases, including two by Foote and a straight steal of home by Albiter.
Several of Henderson State's biggest scoring plays were tied directly to defensive breakdowns rather than sustained hard contact:
- 1st inning: A Dillard error helped put a runner in position, and Henderson State executed a steal of home for an unearned run.
- 2nd inning: Another run scored on a Dillard error at second, extending the inning and adding pressure.
- 3rd inning: Henderson State pushed across another unearned run when Foote reached on an error with an RBI.
In total, Dillard was charged with seven earned runs allowed (meaning two were unearned), but the bigger takeaway is that Henderson State's offense didn't overwhelm with hits—it capitalized on extra chances.
Dillard's bright spots at the plate
Offensively, Dillard managed three hits, and two went for extra bases—an encouraging sign that the lineup was capable of producing quality contact even against a pitcher who struck out eight.
Key Dillard hitters:
- Kyiera Torrence (CF): 1-for-2 (team's lone single)
- Kylie Price (LF): 1-for-2 with a double and a stolen base.
- Ja'Lise Stewart (1B): 1-for-2 with a double
Those extra-base hits from Price and Stewart show Dillard had moments of traction and did put pressure on the defense when contact was made.
Competing in the circle under pressure
Dillard used two pitchers:
- Mary-Elizabeth Landry: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 4 R (3 ER), 3 BB, 4 K
Landry limited Henderson State to just two hits across four innings and recorded four strikeouts—an outing that looks stronger when paired with the reality that multiple innings were prolonged by errors and hit batters.
- Brooklyn Baltzell: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 5 R (4 ER), 3 BB
Henderson State's biggest surge came late, again fueled by traffic on the bases.
This game swung on execution details—defensive clean-up and controlling the running game. Henderson State scored in four of five innings while rarely stringing hits together, turning walks, errors, and steals into runs. Dillard, meanwhile, showed it can generate extra-base contact, but had no walks and faced an efficient Henderson State pitcher who didn't allow many second chances.
Even in a difficult result, Dillard's effort showed through in continued at-bats, extra-base pop from the middle of the order, and stretches of solid pitching that were undermined by extended innings. Clean up the errors and reduce free passes, and the same hit total from Henderson State (five) looks far more manageable—and the game complexion changes quickly.
