NEW ORLEANS (DU) – Isaiah Rankins led a contingent of young Dillard runners Saturday afternoon to a fifth-place finish at the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships in City Park.
The freshman paced the Bleu Devils finishing the 8-kilometer race in 35 minutes, 24.4 seconds.
"The men's team struggled a bit on the long course but ran with a lot of heart including a couple who stepped up and ran so we could score," head coach Derek Gay said.
Four of the five Bleu Devils competing were underclassmen with two of them finishing in the top-20. Rankins placed 14th and was joined by sophomore Langston Carter-Price, who finished 19th (36:47.3). Sophomore Tevrin Jackson placed 26th (40:38.9) while freshman Benjamin Todd finished 29th (41:43.6). Rounding out the scoring was senior Jaylen Stamps finishing 35th in a time of 46:56.4.
"We did not get the outcome that we were hoping for, but throughout the season we showed improvement and promise for the guys who, like the women, are very young," said Gay.
The Bleu Devils scored 118 points and was just 10 points behind SUNO for fourth place. Xavier (La.) placed first (30 points), followed by runner-up Edward Waters (37 points) and third-place finisher Philander Smith (66).
