Dillard men fall further behind in GCAC
Five players in double-figures, including senior guard James Burkes with a team leading 23 points, were not enough to overcome the Badgers. The Bleu Devils started off hot and had an early six-point lead, but Spring Hill tied the game by 14:14 at 12 all. They seesawed over the next 11 minutes until the Badgers tied the game for a fourth time, 32-32, with a little over three minutes left in the first period. Spring Hill took a 41-34 lead into the break.
In second half action, foul trouble kept center Mico Sjekloca and guard Avry Ingram on the bench much of the time. With the starters out, plus sixth man Myron McGowan - who fouled out with less than seven minutes to go in the game - Spring Hill's Antonio Burch broke free to score 19 of his 24 points in the final period.
When it comes to offensive rebounding, second chance opportunities have eluded the Bleu Devils much of this season. They had just 10 against the Badgers. The last time DU posted more offensive than defensive rebounds was November 21, 2009, against Talladega, when they grabbed 26 and a total of 45 for the game. This time out, Spring Hill bested them by 10 more, overall, 33-23.
Other Dillard scorers were Autrail Manning, with 14, McGowan fouled out with a dozen, and Sjekloca and Cornice Wingate each had 10. Additionally, Sjekloca grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Wingate dished out six assists for the Bleu Devils.
Burch led the Badgers in scoring, followed by Nick Brown (19 points and nine rebounds), Owen McNally (18), and Marcus Coleman (11).
Dillard will get another shot at a conference win when it plays Tougaloo College in Jackson, Miss., on Thursday, January 21. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Owens Health and Wellness Center.
