(New Orleans, La.) With a rare 73-65 victory at the Castle, the Lady Bleu Devils did something that they have not done in almost six years; defeat Southern University at New Orleans on the road for a huge Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory.
Dillard (11-5, 3-1 GCAC) was led by splash sister Shaelynn Moore (SO/Houston, Texas) who finished with a game high 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, including five 3-pointers. Moore currently ranks eighth in the nation in 3-pointers made per game (2.9). Senior post player Keona Favis (SR/Shreveport, La.) had a solid presence in the paint as she scored 13 points and connected on 3-of-4 free throws. Splash sister Alyssa Washington (SO/Austin, Texas) filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, nine boards, four assists and three steals in 36 minutes.
Junior transfer Alexia McDonald (JR/Petal, Miss.) came off the bench to score 12 points and grab nine rebounds for Dillard while sophomore transfer Adriiana Jackson (SO/Houston, Texas) was productive in almost every aspect, scoring 10 points and knocking down 8-of-10 free throws. Jackson also dished out six assists, grabbed five rebounds, produced five steals and even had one block in the crucial road victory.
SUNO's Taiyla Jackson led her team with 21 points and nine rebounds while teammate Briana Upshur produced the games only double-double with 14 points and 12 boards.
The Lady Bleu Devils return to action on Monday, January 23 as they host Edward Waters College in GCAC action. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Battlefield in Dent Hall. Since Dillard defeated the Lady Tigers on February 23, 2015, they have lost three straight to EWC, including a quarter-final upset at home in the 2015 GCAC Women's Basketball Tournament. Dillard was a three seed while EWC was the sixth seed.
