NEW ORLEANS – Dillard University will host its annual Bleu Devil Classic basketball weekend, Friday Feb. 17 through Sunday Feb. 19. Today, the University announced the official schedule of events beginning Friday, February 17-19. Each year, the Bleu Devil Classic brings together students, alumni, family and friends for an exciting weekend leading up to the highly anticipated men's and women's basketball matchups against Dillard's longtime crosstown rival, Xavier University.
The 9th Annual Billy Ray Hobley Scholarship Gala remains the centerpiece of the weekend. This year's gala will be held on Friday, Feb. 17 at 7:00 p.m., in the Atrium of the Dillard Professional Schools and Sciences Building. "The Gala is an important fundraiser for student scholarships as well as a great celebration that allows us to acknowledge exceptional leadership and the legacies of two very accomplished former athletes," said Dillard Athletic Director Dr. Kiki Baker-Barnes.
This year's recipient of The Bleu Flame of Excellence Award will be New Orleans Pelicans Head Coach, Alvin Gentry. Now in its second year, the Blue Flame of Excellence award was created to honor local and national figures that have demonstrated excellence in the areas of community service and athletics.
The Legacy Award will be presented to former track athlete Ronald Henderson, '63 and long-time basketball assistant Walter Tillman, '67. The Legacy Award was created to honor former Dillard University athletes or administrators who have demonstrated excellence in their career and community. This award has been presented annually since 2011.
The two Dillard University student-athletes who will receive The Billy Ray Hobley Endowed Scholarship are senior Keona Favis (SR/Shreveport, La.) and junior Patrick Thompson (JR/Geismar, La.). The Billy Ray Hobley Endowed scholarship is awarded to a Dillard University student-athlete or athletes each year that have at least a 2.5 GPA and embody the spirit of Billy Ray Hobley.
