(Hattiesburg, Ms.) The Bleu Devils played one of their best games of the season, scoring 37 buckets on 22 assists and shooting 56 percent from the field as they destroyed the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' eighth ranked team in the country in William Carey by the score of 102-74 in Hattiesburg at Clinton Gymnasium. Dillard ranks among the country's best in assists and assists per game, landing at number three in the NAIA in both categories.
Dillard (8-3, 0-0 GCAC) was led by Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Demetric Austin (SR/Washington, D.C.) who finished with a double-double, grabbing 10 boards and scoring 36 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field, including a near-perfect 12-of-14 from the charity stripe. In his first official minute in a Dillard University jersey, junior transfer guard Quinton Jackson (JR/Cambridge, Md.) opened the game with a slam dunk and finished the half a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, including four 3-pointers as Dillard led by 16 at the break. The second half was more domination from the Bleu Devils, who picked up their eighth win of the season. On the other hand, the #8 Crusaders fall to 7-2 on the season. Both losses this season have come at the hands of the Dillard Bleu Devils.
Point guard Dennis Hightower (SR/Chicago, Ill.), who is currently second in the nation in assists per game with 6.2, finished with 16 points and eight assists in 31 minutes for Dillard. Junior transfer Jalen McGaughy (JR/Dearborn, Mich.) had a solid output as he finished with 12 points and five rebounds while teammate Jackson finished with a near triple-double, scoring 21 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out nine assists in his debut as a Bleu Devil.
Xavier University transfer Troy Salvant finished the game with 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field, including four 3-pointers in the loss for William Carey.
Dillard returns to action on Monday, December 12 as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. To face Stillman College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
