(New Orleans) The Dillard University Bleu Devils basketball team took care of business with its fourth straight victory at the Battlefield in Dent Hall, this time over a winless but feisty Paul Quinn College team by the score of 115-87, its highest scoring output of the season.
In the first half, the Bleu Devils (7-3, 0-0 GCAC) shot an incredible 66 percent from the field behind Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Demetric Austin (SR/Washington, D.C.), who finished with the games only double-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 14 boards in the win. Austin also produced three assists and three blocks in 36 minutes of action while teammate Jalen McGaughy (JR/Dearborn, Mich.) finished with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field, including an arsenal of amazing dunks and alley-oops. McGaughy also grabbed eight rebounds in the victory. Point guard Dennis Hightower (SR/Chicago, Ill.), who entered the game ranked fifth in the nation in both total assists (51) and assists per game (5.7), finished with 18 points, nine assists, three steals and just two turnovers in 30 minutes.
As a team the Bleu Devils entered the contest ranked fifth in the nation in total assists with 174 and 10th in the nation in assists per game with 19.3. Tonight, Dillard produced 31 total assists versus 23 for Paul Quinn. The Bleu Devils also committed a season-low eight turnovers against the Tigers, who fall to 0-8 on the season while Dillard picks up its seventh win of the season.
The 2015 GCAC Freshman of the Year, Patrick Thompson (JR/Geismar, La.), was one rebound shy of a double-double as he finished with 15 points and nine boards while Mississippi native Kristian Clark (SR/Ocean Springs, Miss.) filled up the stat sheet with a season-high 14 points and added six rebounds, four assists and three blocks for Dillard.
The Bleu Devils return to action on Saturday, December 10 as they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. to face #10 William Carey University. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. Dillard defeated William Carey on November 10 by the score of 91-84 at the Battlefield in Dent Hall.
