(New Orleans) The Dillard University Bleu Devils are at it again. The team recently achieved 11 straight home victories at the Battlefield in Dent Hall with a 91-84 upset victory over the nation's tenth ranked team in William Carey University. The Bleu Devils were led by last season's Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Montrey Thomas (SO/Shreveport, La.) as he finished with a career-high 29 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field. Thomas feasted on the foul line, hitting 13-of-15 shots from the charity stripe. This season the young north Louisiana "318" native has flourished from GCAC Freshman of the Year to fourth leading scorer in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) with 26.6 points per game.
GCAC Preseason Player of the Year senior Demetric Austin (SR/Washington, D.C.) had a quiet night as he finished with just 10 points and seven boards in 24 minutes for the Dillard University Bleu Devils (3-0, 0-0 GCAC) while teammate Jessie Ward (SO/Maringouin, La.) picked up the slack and scored 18 points, hit four three pointers and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Xavier University transfer Troy Salvant led the way for William Carey with 22 points as he buried 6-of-9 from behind the arc, but it wasn't enough as William Carey, the NAIA's 10th ranked team in the country, falls to 1-1 on the season.
The Bleu Devils return to action on Saturday, November 12 as they host Texas Wesleyan University for its annual Homecoming game. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. Dillard is ranked #12 in the NAIA while Texas Wesleyan sits at #20 in the nation.
