(New Orleans) The Dillard Bleu Devils were tested early this year. In their second game of the season, the 12th ranked team in the NAIA found themselves tied at 82 apiece against a tough Wayland Baptist team with less than one minute to play, but in the comfort of their own home, the Battlefield at Dent Hall. Former (2015) Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Patrick Thompson (JR/Geismar, La.) missed an opportunity to take the lead but quickly grabbed his own rebound and was immediately fouled while attempting the put back. He went 1-for-2 from the line breaking the 82-82 tie but his rebound was grabbed by Wayland's Joshua Throns.

After a missed field goal and timeout's by both teams, Wayland had 11 seconds to hit a game-winner. Wayland inbounded the ball and Thompson was forced to switch on a screen. An inlet pass was made and Thompson leaped high in the air and sealed the game with a huge steal, making up for his missed free throw just moments earlier as Dillard held on for the 85-82 victory. Thompson, nicknamed "The Man-Child", currently ranks number four in the entire NAIA in offensive rebounds per game with five, perhaps none larger than the last one.

Dillard's Demetric Austin (SR/Washington, D.C.), the 2016-17 GCAC Men's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year, along with 2016 GCAC Men's Basketball Freshman of the Year Montrey Thomas (SO/Shreveport, La.) both had a team-high 24 points each and also both added six boards each on the afternoon while Thompson finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, one crucial steal and a handful of timely defensive plays, forcing several charging violations against Wayland Baptist throughout the game. Senior Dennis Hightower (SR/Chicago, Ill.) chipped in with 12 points and six assists, three rebounds and one steal.

The Bleu Devils return to action on Thursday, November 10 as they host William Carey University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. Dillard is ranked #12 in the NAIA while William Carey sits at #10 in the nation.
