Women's Cross Country - Sat, Oct. 22, 2016

(Jacksonville, Fla.) With a time of 22.03, sophomore Hydeia Barney (SO/Pittsburg, Calif.) of Dillard University produced a fifth place finish at the 5K 2016 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Championships while teammate junior Sasha Newman (JR/Antioch, CA) picked up an eighth place finish, posting a time of 23:01. Both runners earned automatic bids to National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) nationals next month and both also earned All-GCAC honors with top 10 finishes.

As a team the Bleu Devils finished third overall behind Xavier (1) and Edward Waters (2). Sophomore Tajdreana Hurst (SO/Katy, Texas) finished 13th overall with a time of 24:41 while teammate sophomore LaMika LaFrance (SO/New Orleans, La.) picked up a 20th place finish with a time of 27 flat. Freshman Jasmine Elliott (FR/Chicago, Ill.) finished 27th overall, posting a time of 28:58.

Barney and Newman will now prepare for the NAIA Women's Cross Country National Championships which is on Saturday, November 19 in Elsah, Ill. The meet was previously scheduled to take place in North Carolina but recently relocated to Illinois.
