(New Orleans) Dillard was handed its first loss in conference play as they were swept (25-15, 26-24, 25-14) by crosstown rival Xavier University at the Battlefield in Dent Hall in front of a packed house. The Gold Nuggets remain undefeated in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference while the Lady Bleu Devils fall to 2-1 in GCAC play.
Local members of Ochsner Sports Medicine Institute were honored at the game while the volleyball team wore purple socks in order to raise awareness for National Hazing Prevention Week.
Dillard was led by freshman Tristan Cojoe (FR/Cedar Hill, Texas) who had a team-high eight kills, but the reigning GCAC Attacker of the Week, freshman Corneisja Harrison (FR/Cypress, Texas) was shut down to just five kills in the loss. Other than that, there was not much offensive production from the Lady Bleu Devils (6-11, 2-1 GCAC) who dropped its third home game of the year. The team came out flat in the first set but showed signs of life as they went on a major run and tied things up late in the second set despite trailing by as many as seven points. Unfortunately, Xavier weathered the storm and somehow survived for a 26-24 victory and eventually finished off the Lady Bleu Devils in the third and final set. The struggle against the crosstown rival is not new; in fact, the last time that Dillard defeated Xavier was on September 30, 2010, but first year head coach Nancy Sikobe says she is determined to change the culture.
Senior Demetria Horton (SR/Dallas, Texas) picked up 15 digs and was honored at halftime for producing 1,000+ career digs and receptions at Dillard.
On Saturday, September 24, the Lady Bleu Devils face Edward Waters College in GCAC action. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. in Florida.
