Women's Track & Field - Wed, May 25, 2016

(Gulf Shores, Ala.) Dillard University is sending eight athletes to the 2016 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Alabama. Opening ceremonies begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 26 at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores.

Sprinters Kaitlyn Fortuna (JR/New Orleans, La.), Megan Reed (SO/Thibodaux, La.), India Ware (JR/Missouri City, Texas) and Kahlia Columbus (FR/Houston, Texas) will all partake in the women's 200 meter dash while Fortuna and Columbus will also participate in the women's 400m dash. Furthermore, Fortuna is the lone ranger who will compete in the women's 100m dash.

"We will do our best to return some All-Americans," said head coach Bobby Williams, who was recently named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year.

Fortuna is ranked sixth in the nation in the women's 200m dash and ranks 10th in the women's 400m dash while teammates Reed, Ware and Columbus rank 17th, 20th and 23rd respectively in the women's 400m dash.

Sophomore hurdler Sasha Newman (SO/Antioch, Calif.) will represent Dillard University in both the women's 100 and 400m hurdles. She is currently ranked third in the nation in the 100m hurdles and sixth in the nation in the 400m hurdles.

"Sasha has a great chance to come back as an All-American in both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles, and I am also interested to see what freshman Quamel Sessoms will do as a freshman because he is a phenomenal jumper. If I can bring back four All-Americans out of eight competitors, then that will be quite an accomplishment for Dillard University."  Sessoms is the lone male who will represent Dillard at nationals. He is currently ranked 12th in the nation in the men's long jump.
