(New Orleans, La.) For the second straight year, the Dillard Bleu Devils (166 pts.) finished second at the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans. Edward Waters finished first with a total of 200 points to claim their second straight title on the men's side while Southern University of New Orleans finished in third place with 149 points.
"I am proud of my team's performance today," said Dillard head track coach Bobby Williams. "No one should leave with their head held down."
The Bleu Devils 4x1 relay team, comprised of Travis Robertson (FR/Oakland, Calif.), Eliott Cleveland (SO/Houston, Texas), Quamel Sessoms (FR/Portsmouth, Va.) and Stephano Flowers (SO/Terry, Miss.) finished second behind SUNO, posting a time of 42.63 while the men's 4x4 squad, including Charles Dickerson (FR/New Orleans, La.), Lorenzo Gordon (SO/Dallas, Texas) (SO/Austin, Texas), Larry Trimble (FR/New Orleans, La.) and Hampton Craig (FR/Port Allen, La.), finished in third place with a time of 3:27.71.
Graduating senior Courtney Tyler (SR/Richmond, Calif.) finished first out of 11 throwers in the men's javelin throw with a distance of 42.72 meters while twin brother Cameron Tyler (SR/Richmond, Calif.) picked up a second place finish out of 12 throwers in the men's discus throw with a distance of 38.81 meters.
"I thank God and Coach Bobby for letting me on the team," said Courtney Tyler. "I walked on knowing I knew nothing about track, but I know I am an athlete and something told me to unleash that. Track is a strenuous sport and it's taught me to always push your limits and never give up, and that's just what I did at Dillard as a student-athlete."
Sessoms continued his sensational freshman campaign with two first place finishes; one in the men's long jump and one in the men's high jump, leaping distances of 7.13 meters and 1.78 meters respectively.
Theodore Kemp (JR/Indianapolis, Ind.) picked up a second place finish in the men's hammer throw with a distance of 32.51 meters while teammate and Dillard University Freshman Class President Joseph Caldwell (FR/Houston, Texas) picked up a first place finish in the men's pole vault with a height of 3.36 meters. Dillard swept the event as they gained points by placing in the top four slots; Sessoms finished in second while Oladipupo Olafuyi (FR/Lagos, Nigeria ) and Jean-Marck Charles (FR/Miami, Fla.) rounded out the third and fourth spots.
In the men's 800 meter run, Lorenzo Gordon and Joshua Thomas (SO/South Los Angles, Calif. ) finished second and third place respectively, posting times of 2:00.99 and 2:04.13 while Robertson picked up a second place finish in the men's 200 meter dash with a time of 22.33.
Cleveland finished fourth in the men's 100 meter dash, posting a time of 11.04 while teammate Robertson finishing just five tenths of a second behind him for a fifth place finish. In the men's 5,000 meter run, Kyle Herbert (FR/New Orleans, La.) crossed first for Dillard and finished fifth overall, posting a time of 19:06.97.
