New Orleans (excerpts from www.gcaconf.com) — The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced today the 12-member All-GCAC Women's Basketball team, along with the five member GCAC All-Defensive team, as voted on by a panel of the conference's seven head coaches. Dillard University senior forward Alena Evans (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) earned Second Team All-GCAC honors and landed a spot on the first-ever GCAC All-Defensive team while teammate freshman Shaelynn Moore (FR/Houston, Texas) earned Second Team All-GCAC Honorable Mention.
"I feel like this is the end," said Evans. "I had a great four years at Dillard. The only thing I can do is play my heart out in this last game because I'll never get moments like these again."
The Las Vegas native is third in the conference in double-doubles (6) and leads her Lady Bleu Devils in scoring, rebounding and steals this season with 14.8 points per game (6th in GCAC/44th in NAIA), 8.2 boards per game (2nd in GCAC/28th in NAIA), and 2.16 steals per game (5th in GCAC/37th in NAIA. She is also number two in the GCAC in both field goal percentage and offensive rebounds per game at .419 (46th in NAIA) and 3.4 (18th in NAIA) respectively.
The Lady Bleu Devils finished with nine regular season wins, good enough for sixth seed in this week's conference tournament. The first round of the women's tournament will be at the Castle on the campus of Southern University at New Orleans as they face the third seed Xavier University Gold Nuggets on Friday, March 4 at 12:00 noon. On February 6, the Lady Bleu Devils defeated Xavier by the score of 57-52 in the 2016 Crosstown Classic, but on February 27, the Gold Nuggets returned the favor and beat the Lady Bleu Devils by the score of 63-57 at the 2016 Bleu Devil Classic.
"I haven't given up though," said Evans. "I know there is still an opportunity for us to be conference champs."
With a win, the Lady Bleu Devils advance to the semi-final round of the GCAC tournament for the 1st time under head coach Norbert Rome and will face the winner of the #2 Edward Waters/ #7 Tougaloo game. This game will be on Saturday, March 5 at 5:00 p.m. at the Convocation Center on the campus of Xavier University. Dillard was swept by Edward Waters but swept Tougaloo in the season series.
A win would catapult the Lady Bleu Devils to the GCAC championship game as they face either #1 Talladega/#4 Philander Smith or #5 SUNO on Sunday, March 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Convocation Center on the campus of Xavier University. The Lady Bleu Devils were swept by both Talladega and SUNO but split the season series against Philander Smith.
