(New Orleans) The Lady Bleu Devils had a shot to sweep the Gold Nuggets in the regular season for the first time since 1985, but Xavier avenged last year's loss at the Battlefield with a 63-57 victory over Dillard at the 2016 Allstate Sugar Bowl Bleu Devil Classic. Ironically, both teams will meet again in the first round of next week's Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament.

Dillard (9-16, 4-8 GCAC) was led by freshman Alyssa Washington (FR/Austin, Texas) as she finished with a team-high 15 points and hit three 3-pointers. She also grabbed four rebounds and had two steals and two assists in a full 40 minutes of action while teammate senior forward Alena Evans (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) scored 12 points and grabbed seven boards to go along with four turnovers, two assists and one steal in her final game at the Battlefield in Dent Hall.

As a team the Lady Bleu Devils were dominated on the glass, giving up 58 rebounds while grabbing just 28. The Gold Nuggets took advantage of Dillard's small lineup and pulled down an amazing 26 boards on the offensive end but shot a dismal 27 percent from the floor while Dillard shot 39 percent from the field.

Dillard shared the ball all afternoon and produced a total of 18 assists in the game. In fact, Dillard point guard Shantrell Lumar (JR/Baton Rouge, La.) finished with nearly as many assists (11) as the entire Xavier team (12), but the difference in the game was how the Gold Nuggets were able to spend a large portion of the game at the foul line, knocking down over three times as many free throws (22) as their opponent (7).

Junior forward Keona Favis (JR/Shreveport, La.) returned from injury after missing the previous two games and provided a spark off the bench with 10 points and five boards in the loss while freshman Shaelynn Moore (FR/Houston, Texas) finished with 11 points and hit three 3-pointers in her first ever Bleu Devil Classic.

Xavier's Whitney Gathright finished with a double-double and led the Gold Nuggets with a game-high 17 points while grabbing 11 rebounds in the victory. However, the senior guard struggled to find the basket most of the afternoon as she went 3-for-15 from the field, but made up for it at the line by going a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Her team's bench outscored Dillard's bench 22-10.
