New Orleans—Although Dillard opened the 2016 Crosstown Classic with a 10-0 run, the Bleu Devils somehow managed to give up 41 second half points to Xavier as they fell 69-61 at the Convocation Center. The loss marks Dillard's second straight loss, both at the hands of New Orleans teams.

The Bleu Devils (14-8, 5-2 GCAC) tied a season-low 29 points in a half (2nd) and shot just 34 percent (23-of-67) from the field while its opponents shot an unexpected 50 percent (26-of-52) from the field. Dillard was led by junior Demetric Austin (JR/Washington, D.C.) who finished with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 14 boards in the loss. Freshman Montrey Thomas (FR/Shreveport, La.) was next on the team with 15 points, hitting 6-of-12 shots from the field and burying two 3-pointers to go along with four assists and four boards.

Dillard shot a dismal 5-of-23 (22 percent) from downtown while Xavier hit 6-of-15 (40 percent) from 3-point land, however; the Bleu Devils managed to outrebound the Gold Rush 41 to 31.

Dillard continues GCAC action on Lundi Gras, Monday, February 8 as they travel across town to face the Southern University of New Orleans Knights. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the newly renovated Castle.
