(New Orleans) Dillard was less than 10 minutes away from being 3-0 in conference as they entered the fourth quarter with an eight point lead against the defending Gulf Coast Athletic champs, but the Lady Bleu Devils scored only five points in the final quarter and fell 55 to 54 to the Lady Knights of Southern University at New Orleans at the Battlefield in Dent Hall.
The Lady Bleu Devils (7-9, 2-1 GCAC) were led by point guard Shantrell Lumar (JR/Baton Rouge, La.) as she finished with 13 points, hitting 5-of-9 shots from the field. She was 3-of-6 from the foul line but unfortunately couldn't connect on the biggest one of them all and when her team trailed by two points with 0.9 seconds left in the game, and with the weight of the entire gym on her shoulders, Lumar went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe. The Broadmoor High School alum dished out five assists and produced two steals but had a season-high nine turnovers in the loss.
Senior Alena Evans (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) was honored in the middle of the third quarter for scoring 1,000 plus points and grabbing 500 plus rebounds in her collegiate career as a Lady Bleu Devil, but tied a season-low with five points in the loss. However, she grabbed career-highs in defensive rebounds (9), offensive rebounds (8) and total rebounds (17).
As a team Dillard nailed just half (12-of-24) of their free throws while the Lady Knights hit 10-of-14 free throws. The Lady Bleu Devils produced 11 steals and forced 21 turnovers in the loss.
With the victory, SUNO advances to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in conference. Senior Rayvin Miller led the way for the Lady Knights with 14 points, five boards, six turnovers, three assists and two steals in 29 minutes.
Dillard returns to action on Saturday, January 23 as they host the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' (NAIA) 21st ranked team in the country in GCAC action. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
