(New Orleans) With the score tied 70 to 70, Texas College's Sebastian Opon scored the next six points for his team including a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left to lift the Steers over the Bleu Devils by the score of 77-75 at the Battlefield in Dent Hall. Opon finished with a game-high 18 points in the victory.
With the defeat, Dillard (9-6, 1-1 GCAC) suffered its third heartbreaking two-point loss at home this season. Demetric Austin (JR/Washington, D.C.) and Montrey Thomas (FR/Shreveport, La.) both had a team-high 12 points as they were the only two Dillard players in double-figures.
As a team the Bleu Devils grabbed 34 rebounds while its opponents pulled down 37 boards. Dillard shot a dismal 21 percent (4-for-19) from behind the arc while the Steers nailed half (11-of-22) of their three-point attempts.
Dillard returns to Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday, January 13 as they host Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO). Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. Last season, Dillard split the season series against the SUNO Knights as they won by five points at home at the Battlefield but suffered a 30-point shellacking on the road at the Castle.
