(New Orleans, La.) Despite trailing the majority of the afternoon, the Dillard University Lady Bleu Devils went on the road and grinded out a crucial 71-69 victory over the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' 13th ranked team in the nation in the Loyola Wolf Pack. With the win, Dillard completes the season sweep over Loyola.
"Don't call it an upset if you expect to win" said Dillard head coach Norbert Rome. "Our team was prepared and ready for the challenge."
The Lady Bleu Devils (5-6, 0-0 GCAC) were led by senior Alena Evans (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) who finished with a game-high 25 points on 7-of-19 shooting from the field and was clutch from the charity stripe, nailing 11-of-12 free throws in the victory. Evans also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out three assists, committing only one turnover in 37 minutes of action.
"Hitting all those free throws gave me confidence because I have been struggling from the line this season, but my teammates have been encouraging me to take my time and sink it in," said Evans.
To add icing to the cake, she scored her 1,000th point as a Lady Bleu Devil in this game.
Despite trailing by seven points at the break, Dillard outscored Loyola 36 to 27 in the second half. As a team the Wolf Pack outrebounded the Lady Bleu Devils 43 to 36 but Dillard only committed seven turnovers versus 13 for Loyola. Briana Oglesby finished with a team-high 13 points for Loyola while teammate Di'Mond Jackson chipped in with 12 points.
Post-player Meghan Temple was held to just 10 points and eight rebounds before fouling out in the loss.
Dillard returns to action on Saturday, December 12 as they travel to Lafayette to face the University of Louisiana-Lafayette in an exhibition contest. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
