(Hattiesburg, Miss.) After a successful stint at the Battlefield in the first contest, the Dillard Bleu Devils suffered its worst loss of the season on the return game in Hattiesburg by the score of 86-76 at the hands of the William Carey University Crusaders, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' 14th ranked team in the country.
The Crusaders opened the game on a 24-6 run and never looked back. At the half William Carey led 48 to 38 as Dillard continued to cut the deficit down to as many as eight in the second half, but the Crusaders were never really fazed and controlled the game the entire night.
The Bleu Devils (5-3, 0-0 GCAC) were led by Demetric Austin (JR/Washington, D.C.) and Dennis Hightower (JR/Chicago, Ill.) who both finished with a team-high 19 points. Hightower dished out four assists but had five turnovers in the loss while Austin added eight rebounds for Dillard. As a team the Bleu Devils committed 18 turnovers and the Crusaders committed 17. Although Dillard won the rebounding war 44 to 39, William Carey shot 48 percent from the field for the game while the Bleu Devils shot just 38 percent.
The Crusaders were led by point guard Donta Pittman who finished with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Pittman also added seven boards, four assists, one block and one steal in 28 minutes for William Carey.
Dillard returns to action on Saturday, December 12 as they travel to Georgia to face Life University. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
