(New Orleans, La.) Less than 24 hours after falling to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' 18th ranked team in the country, the Lady Bleu Devils knocked off the NAIA's 16th ranked team, Shawnee State, by the score of 80-71 at the Convocation Center in the second day of the 2015 Xavier Classic.
Dillard (4-6, 0-0 GCAC) was led by Alena Evans (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) who had a game-high 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the victory. Evans is just 34 points away from scoring her 1,000th point as a Lady Bleu Devil. Sharpshooter Shaelynn Moore (FR/Houston, Texas) hit a total of four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points in 30 minutes while Alyssa Washington (FR/Austin, Texas) had a solid output, finishing with 15 points. Rashida Ademosu (SR/Nashville, Tenn.) chipped in with 12 points and grabbed four rebounds in the win.
The score was tied 39-39 at the half but the Lady Bleu Devils showed composure and weathered the storm, outscoring the Bears by five points in the third quarter and by four points in the final one. As a team Dillard outrebounded Shawnee State 33-29. Both teams shot sensational from the charity stripe; the Bears knocked down 12-of-16 free throws (75 percent) while the Lady Bleu Devils nailed 17-of-23 foul shots (74 percent).
NAIA All-American Ali Zieverink led the way for Shawnee State with 23 points and six boards in the loss.
The Lady Bleu Devils return to action on Saturday, December 5 as they travel across town to face the NAIA's 16th ranked team in the country in Loyola University. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. In the first meeting on November 2, Dillard pulled off the 73-68 upset at the Battlefield in Dent Hall in Dillard's season opener.
