(New Orleans, La.) The Dillard University Bleu Devils pulled off the upset victory at the Battlefield in Dent Hall against the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' 14th (T) ranked team in the country in William Carey University by the score 83-74 at the Battlefield in Dent Hall. With the victory, Dillard ties its win total from last season.
The Bleu Devils (5-1, 0-0 GCAC) were led by Ramon Johnson (SO/Newark, N.J.) who finished with a game-high 23 points shooting 9-for-14 from the field in 25 minutes of action. The 6'9" center had the tough task of battling against the nation's leading defensive rebounder in Emmanuel Davis of the Crusaders, but Johnson won the rebound battle by grabbing a total of eight boards to just six for Davis. He also added two blocks and one assist in the win.
Once Dennis Reed (JR/England, Ark.) exited the game with a high ankle sprain, Dexter Porchia (JR/Stephens, Ark.)'s intensity and leadership proved to be a huge lift for Dillard down the stretch as he finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, five of them coming on the offensive end. Before leaving the game, Reed had nine points and six rebounds in just 22 minutes. Porchia also added three assists and two steals in 30 minutes of action for the Bleu Devils. Teammate Demetric Austin (JR/Washington, D.C.) had just two first half points but also played big down the stretch, knocking down three huge 3-pointers in the second half as he finished with a total of 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Austin was not only perfect from behind the arc but added eight rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal in just 24 minutes of action for Dillard.
As a team Dillard shot 48 percent from the field (32-of-67) while holding its opponent to just 37 percent (27-of-73). Once again, Dillard won the rebound battle over its adversary 49-43.
The Crusaders were led by point guard Donta Pittman who finished with 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting. Pittman also added five steals, five turnovers, four assists and three rebounds in 32 minutes for William Carey.
Dillard returns to action on Saturday, November 21 as they host the NAIA's 14th (T) ranked team in the country Louisiana State University at Shreveport at the Battlefield in Dent Hall. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
