(New Orleans, La.) – After suffering a tough two-point overtime loss at home against Louisiana State University-Alexandria just days ago, the Dillard University Bleu Devils returned to the Battlefield in Dent Hall to produce a solid victory by defeating the Life University Running Eagles by the score of 88-78.
The Bleu Devils were led by Demetric Austin (JR/Washington, D.C.) who finished the game with 20 points and 16 rebounds (10 on the defensive end) while teammate Dennis Reed (JR/England, Ark.) led the team in rebounds with 17. Dennis Hightower (JR/Chicago, Ill.) led the team in assists with four.
In the first half, the Bleu Devils (3-1, 0-0 GCAC) started off in a rough spot as Life University jumped out on top thanks to a 5-0 run to open up the game. Things slowly started to pick up for Dillard as they were able to come back and lead the Eagles 47-39 at halftime.
The second half was full of turnovers for both teams. In just in the latter half alone, Dillard had total of 16 turnovers while Life had 13. Neither team was able to secure complete control as the lead changed 15 times and the score was tied eight times. However, Dillard weathered the storm and played with high intensity in the second half, shooting 18-for-38 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free throw line. Dillard outrebounded their opponents for the fourth straight game, grabbing a total of 49 over Life's 40.
Reed made the only dunk of the night for Dillard as they secured a five point lead with 1:53 left in the second half en route to the 10 point victory.
The Bleu Devils return to action on November 14 as they travel to Chicago to face Paul-Quinn College in the Windy City HBCU Hardwood Classic. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
