(New Orleans, La.) (GCAConf.com) The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced today its Preaseason All-GCAC Team along with its choice for preseason player of the year and it's preseason coaches' poll for the 2015-16 women's basketball season. Selections are made through a vote of the league's coaches who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes or teams.
Talladega College guard/forward Tajanee Wells was a near unanimous selection as Preseason Player of the Year, earning six of seven first place votes.
Joining Wells on the Preseason All-GCAC Team are Whitney Gathright (Xavier), Alena Evans (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) (Dillard), Montoria Atkinson (Tougaloo) and Rubyunnia McHenry (Philander Smith). Wells was last season's GCAC Newcomer of the Year as well as a First Team All-GCAC selection. Gathright and Evans were also members of the All-GCAC First Team, while Atkinson was last season's Freshman of the Year and a member of the All-GCAC Second Team.
"I'm honored to receive this vote from the coaches in the conference," said Evans. "Although I do believe other people on my team are worthy of being selected to Preseason All-Conference, I do plan to lead our team to a winning season. I'm excited to work with this new Lady Bleu Devil team in my final season at Dillard. We definitely have not forgotten our early exit in last year's tournament, and we will definitely use that as fuel and motivation for this year."
The Lady Bleu Devils basketball team's season opener is on Friday, October 30 as they face Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas.
