(New Orleans, La.) Dillard University was the host school for an exciting 2015 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Tad Gormley Stadium, however, the Bleu Devils came up just short of defending their championship title as they finished in second place with 121 points. Edward Waters College pulled out a first place finish over Dillard with 156 points and Southern University at New Orleans landed in third place with 103 points.
Despite being low in number, Dillard battled until the end. Senior and 3x All-American Jevonte Ezzard (SR/College Park, GA) led the way for Dillard with a third place finish in the Men's 3000 Meter Steeplechase with a time of 11.21.88. Ezzard also competed in the Men's 400 Meter Dash and finished fifth with a time of 50.39.
"Physically I'm dead but I feel accomplished knowing if we won or lost that gave 100 percent," said Ezzard, who is one of the most decorated track athletes in the history of the University. The feeling of not winning back to back championships will sting for a while, but Ezzard knows this was not his last chance to make a final mark in his already illustrius four year collegiate career at Dillard and has hope for his young teammates.
"Coach put everybody in perfect races to give us the best chance at obtaining another ring. My teammates have been dealing with injuries the whole season and to see them step up and perform was motivating. Hopefully my teammates who still have more years to compete stay hungry and desire to win and hopefully this loss ignites them to work harder and get better," said Ezzard.
Seniors Tobyus Simmons (SR/Chattanooga, TN) and Kermit Buggage (SR/New Orleans, LA) finished first and third respectively with times of 22.08 and 22.14 in the Men's 200 Meter Dash while Ezzard placed tenth, posting a time of 22.59. Simmons collected a second place finish in the Men's Long Jump while freshman Hamilton Green (FR/Memphis, TN) picked up a fourth place finish. However, Green placed first in the Men's Triple Jump with a distance of 12.45. Junior Theodore Kemp (JR/New Orleans, LA) had a strong showing in the Men's Hammer Throw with a second place finish, throwing a distance a of 25.71 meters.
Freshman Lorenzo Gordon (FR/Dallas, TX) had a solid outing in his first ever collegiate conference championships, finishing second place in the Men's 800 Run with a time of 1:59.06, and also competed in the Men's 1500 Meter Run, placing fourth with a time of 4.20.24. Ezzard finished in eight place in the same race, posting a time of 4.44.88. Gordon also earned a fourth place finish in the Men's 400 Meter Dash with a time of 50.17 while Ezzard finished next with a time of 50.39. Freshman Lindsey Taylor (FR/Houston, TX) finished in eleventh place in the same event with a time of 54.44.
Seniors Rudy Garza (SR/Rosenberg, TX), Buggage, Ezzard and Simmons all competed together in the Men's 4x100 Meter Relay for one final time of their collegiate careers (at a conference championship), finishing in third place with a time of 42.32. Garza also earned a fourth place finish in the Men's 110 Meter Hurdles, posting a time of 16.33.
