(New Orleans, La.) Dillard freshman Patrick Thompson (FR/Dutchtown,LA) was recently named 2015 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Freshman of the Year. Thompson was selected out of a pool of freshman in the conference and then voted on by head coaches.
"I always thought it was possible if I worked hard at it," said Thompson. "There are tons of players from all different places that worked hard too, but I just had to work harder."
Thompson made an immediate impact on a Bleu Devil team that finished with zero conference wins last season. This season, Thompson finished sixth on his team in scoring with 8.3 points per game, but in rebounds he finished second on the team with 4.43 per game. Thompson also finished second on the team in double-doubles with two; one against Texas Wesleyan University and the other against Voorhees College, where he scored a career-high 20 points in a huge home victory at the Battlefield in Dent Hall. He also set career highs in field goals made (8), field goals attempted (12), rebounds (11), assists (3) and steals (2) in that game.
"I came in looking to contribute in any way possible because I heard that DU's record was awful, so I just did what I was asked to do," said Thompson.
When asked about his thoughts for next season, Patrick smiled and responded calmly.
"If I'm here," said Thompson. "I'll do whatever the next coach asks of me; I'm going for player of the year because I can't stop here (at freshman of the year)."
DU ends the season on a four-game losing streak, including its last two losses at the hands of the Xavier Gold Rush.
