(New Orleans, La.) As basketball season approaches, the Dillard University Bleu Devils gear up for another exciting year packed full of triumphs and upsets in the GCAC.
The Bleu Devils are coming off of a 4-15 season and this year head coach Bernard Griffith has added more depth to his roster that includes nine returners, six incoming freshman and one transfer. With their last conference win against Tougaloo College in February 2013, one of Coach Griffith's biggest goals is to turn around the 0-12 record accumulated in conference play.
"My main goal is the same as it is every year. We need to improve records and retain focus and discipline. I am depending on my returners to run what we do in practice in the ball game. My freshmen need to be built up so eventually they can run a starting five. I've always said if they fall into the program they'll all be good."
Sophomores JaCarre Crockett (SO/Monroe, LA) and Kristopher Allmon (SO/Baton Rouge, LA) along with redshirt sophomore Houston Chatman (JR/Houma, LA) and junior Tyrone Williams (JR/Marrero, LA) were named by Griffith as the stand out players that will help push the team back into conference continence.
"I'm looking to build leaders," Griffith stated, "not followers."
In addition to the regular NAIA schedule, 3 NCAA contests will be played on the road against Southern University- Baton Rouge, Southeastern Louisiana University and Alcorn University.
Dillard will play its season opener against Texas College in Tyler, Texas, on October 31st and their home opener will be against Texas College November 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Battlefield in Dent Hall.
