(New Orleans, La.)  The Dillard University men's basketball team added a new recruit to its young squad.  Incoming freshman Marcel Daniels of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans signed a letter of intent to run with the Bleu Devils for the upcoming academic school year.

"We are looking forward to his contribution to Dillard University basketball," said Bleu Devils head coach Bernard Griffith, who spent 27 years at St. Augustine, including 16 years as head boys' basketball coach.

When asked what attracted him to Dillard, Daniels responded confidently.

"I like the atmosphere around the campus," said Daniels.  "Everyone is in high spirits; Dillard is a traditional environment for HBCU's and I can feel that in the presence, plus I got a full-scholarship so that helps too."

Daniels, who plans to major in public health and minor in criminal justice, is the younger brother of RJ Daniels, who is a member of the Xavier University Gold Rush basketball team.  The two brothers will get two seasons to play against one another; their first contest being the Bleu Devil Classic which is on Saturday, January 31 at 5:00 p.m. at the Battlefield in Dent Hall on the campus of Dillard University.

"It's a one in a lifetime thing for me," said Daniels.  "I've never competed against my brother in organized ball.  For all my family who is going to watch, it's going to be real special."

It is all but safe to say that his mother, Mrs. Connie Daniels, will be decked out in Dillard bleu for the Bleu Devil Classic.  She is a Dillard alumna.

Dillard opens the season on Friday, October 31 as they travel to Tyler to face Texas College.  Dillard's home opener is on Tuesday, November 4 as they host Texas College at the Battlefield in Dent Hall.
