New Orleans, LA - The Dillard cross country teams competed this weekend at the 37th annual Azalea City Classic, hosted by the University of South Alabama in Mobile, at Battleship Park. Freshman Byron Myles ran a time of 21: 49. He finished 41 out of 59 runners and was the first Bleu Devil to finish the five kilometer course.
Also scoring for Dillard was last week's top runner Anthony Hingle, a senior, in a time of 22:02, just off his previous best of 21:23. Marcel Williams rounded out the top three Bleu Devil finishers, crossing at the 24:06 mark. The men finished seventh out of seven teams.
In addition to the muddy terrain, Dillard was up against some difficult competition. The winner of the race was the host team, with 18 points, besting its nearest competitor by almost 40 points. South Alabama's Micha Tirop led all runners, completing the race in 15:43.
"With it being only our second meet, we were consistent with what we did last week," said head coach Bobby Williams, Jr.
Last week, Dillard competed at the Radisson Hotel Wolfpack Invitational, hosted by Loyola-New Orleans. The 5K race was DU's first since before Hurricane Katrina. Hingle led all DU runners, followed by Myles (23:03) and Williams (23:15). The men finished fifth out of five teams.
Next up is the LSU Invitational on Saturday, September 26, in Baton Rouge, which should really test the Bleu Devils.
"Looking ahead, we are looking forward to seeing how well we'll do with a longer course [at LSU]," said Williams. "It's an 8K versus a 5K and LSU has steeper hills, so we'll be changing our training regimen this week."
The event will be held at Highland Road Park. The men's race is scheduled for 9:45 a.m.
