Dillard took less than 20 minutes to destroy Alcorn 25-8 in the first set, with most of its serves falling at the feet of the Lady Braves. The second set took a little longer and Alcorn appeared to have its bearings, but the Lady Bleu Devils held on for a 25-23 win. The third set was much like the first, with Dillard's Jessica Goods-Morris, a 6-1 sophomore middle blocker, sealing the deal with a kill to win the game 25-11. Total match time was one hour and five minutes.
"It was really exciting tonight. I think the fan support really pushed them," said head coach Yolanda Brown. "Chemistry was good, we had great ball control, good passes; we played well and finished well. But, I think, the fan support really helped them a lot."
The Lady Bleu Devils (1-4) were led by junior middle blocker Cenquis Rockett, who blasted Alcorn at the net with six kills and four blocks. Goods-Morris was next with five kills and one block and one assisted block. Danta Cobb, a junior setter, landed three service aces and libero Yladrea Marshall, a freshman, scooped up seven digs.
Dillard will host its first conference match when the Lady Badgers of Spring Hill College (2-4, 1-1) visit on Friday, September 18. Match time is 7 p.m. at Dent Gym.
