(New Orleans) The Badgers fought off a determined rally by the Lady Bleu Devils to earn a 57-52 road victory over Dillard University at the Battlefield in Dent Hall.
In the game's early stages, it was a contest of Spring Hill's inside game off penetration by their guards versus the outside and midrange game of Dillard (0-3, 0-0 GCAC).
Over the next five minutes, Spring Hill's outside shooting warmed up and the Badgers built a 20-13 advantage and looked to hold the momentum over Coach Rome's young bunch. The lead grew to as much as 27-14, but Dillard rolled off the final six points of the half to make it a 27-20 Badger lead at the break.
Reigning GCAC Freshman of the Year Alena Evans had a team-high 14 points hitting 6-of-14 shots from the field. Evans also finished with 10 boards, four steals, three blocks and two assists. Junior guard Brittany Smith finished with 10 points, five steals, three rebounds and two assists in the game, but was ice cold from behind the arc, shooting 1-for-10 on the evening.
Dillard was able to tie the game at 31 apiece early in the second half as the momentum shifted to the Lady Bleu Devils after Coach Rome made halftime adjustments and implemented a full court press in the second half.
The game was a back-and-forth affair for the next 10 minutes and found the Badgers leading 53-47 with four minutes to play, but with 17.6 seconds left, a Dillard steal at half court and lay up by Smith made it just a 54-52 Badger lead. Spring Hill's Bria Bohanon was quickly fouled and converted on both free throws at the other end to extend it to 56-52 with 12.8 seconds to play and then iced the game by stealing the inbounds pass.
The Lady Bleu Devils continue regular season play on Saturday, November 30 as they host Loyola University at 5:00 p.m. at the Battlefield in Dent Hall.
