(New Orleans) Despite a tough effort which nearly came down to the wire, the Dillard University Bleu Devils track and field team finished second overall at the 2013 GCAC Track and Field Conference Championships at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans, once again falling to Edward Waters for the second year in a row. Dillard finished with 188 points while Edward Waters ended the day with 212 points.
Dillard swept the Men's 400 Meter Dash by picking up the top four slots. Sophomore Jevonte Ezzard finished first as he crossed the line with a time of 48.53, sophomore Darius Neely finished next with a time of 49.33, and juniors Matthew Jones and Emory Nash finished third and fourth respectively with times of 49.46 and 49.92.
In the Men's 200 Meter Dash, sophomore Tobyus Simmons finished second overall with a time of 22.25, and sophomore Kermit Buggage finished fourth posting a time of 22.83. Jones finished right behind his teammate with a time of 22.91.
Simmons finished second overall in the Men's 100 Meter Dash with a time of 10.92, and Buggage finished third overall posting a time of 11.06.
Nash had a strong performance in the 800 Meter Run finishing second with a time of 2:03.84 and Ezzard finished third posting a time of 2:07.06.
In the Men's 3000 Meter Steeplechase, Ezzard had a fantastic second place finish with a time of 11:13.20, and teammate Daniel Gibson finished third with a time of 11:21.58. Ezzard excelled in the Men's 1500 Meter Run with a third place finish, and Gibson also finished third overall in the Men's 5000 Meter Run with a time of 20:29.66.
Junior hurdler Rudy Garza finished third overall in the Men's 400 Meter Hurdles with a time of 58.69, and senior Runell King finished third overall in the Men's 110 Meter Hurdles posting a time of 15.82.
In the Men's Hammer Throw, senior Terry Church placed second in conference with a distance of 28.97 meters and placed third in the Men's Shot Put with a distance of 11.56 meters.
The Bleu Devils will now prepare for the Men's NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships will be May 23-25 in Marion, Indiana, on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University, but first they will participate in one final meet at Southeastern Louisiana University on Friday, April 19.
