(New Orleans) The wait is over. The 2013 GCAC Track and Field Conference Championships take place this Saturday in New Orleans at Tad Gormley Stadium where the Lady Bleu Devils look to defend their title and the Bleu Devils look to improve on a second place finish at last year's championships where the men of Edward Waters took home the top spot.
The Bleu Devils are led by sophomore Jevonte Ezzard who is a multi-sport participant for Dillard, not only participating in cross country but also qualifying for nationals in what some say is one of the toughest sports around. Ezzard has the fourth best time in the nation in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 47.71.
Teammate sophomore Darius Neely is 13th in the 400 with a time of 48.94. Neely is 14th in the NAIA in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 21.84 and also 14th in the 100 Meter Dash with a time of 10.75.
"I think we are going to win this year if we all come out and do our best," said Neely. "I'm confident in my team and I feel we will get some rings this year."
The Men's 4x400 Meter relay team is ranked 3rd in the nation with a time of 3:12:96.
Dillard's 4x100 Meter relay teams are both ranked top ten in the nation. The men rank 6th overall with a time of 41.53 and the women are ranked 7th with a time of 47.86.
Field events for Saturday's GCAC championships begin at 8:45 a.m. with the hammer throw. Running events start 9:30 a.m. with the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase. The National Anthem will be conducted at 10:55 a.m., and then the excitement begins with the 4x100 Meter Relays starting at 11:00 a.m.
