(New Orleans) The Dillard Lady Bleu Devils continued their overall impressive play on the basketball court and dominated Edward Waters College 71-58 on Monday evening on the final day of the MLK Weekend GCAC Conference Mid-Season Tournament.

The Lady Bleu Devils (5-0, 8-6) led from beginning to end in the victory. The Lady Bleu Devils now have pushed their winning streak to five games and are two games over .500 for the first time in two years.

From the opening tip, the Lady Bleu Devils had more energy and intensity than the Lady Tigers. Always using their suffocating defense as a crutch, the Lady Bleu Devils opened the game with an 11-3 lead. The Lady Tigers were unable to withstand the intense defensive pressure by the Lady Bleu Devils, turning the ball over frequently. The Lady Bleu Devils were knocking down shots from all areas on the floor and went into the locker room up 33-27 at halftime. The Lady Bleu Devils shot 48% from the field as a team in the first half, while their defense forced Edward Waters to shoot an ice-cold 32% from the field.

Early in the second half, Edward Waters turned up their defensive pressure, forcing the Lady Bleu Devils to turn the ball over and take ill-advised shots. A three-pointer by T. Tolbert for Lady Tigers brought the Lady Bleu Devils lead down to two at 46-44 with just under ten minutes left in the game. The Lady Bleu Devils responded with a 16-5 run to put the game out of reach and coast to the thirteen-point victory.

Ariel Mitchell led the Lady Bleu Devils with another impressive performance, scoring 23 points and grabbing 4 rebounds. Lauren Daniel had 17 points for the Lady Bleu Devils. Jazzmin Smith had her second double-double in a row, tallying 12 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Kierrariel Mitchell had a breakout performance for the Lady Bleu Devils with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

The Lady Bleu Devils will now have a week off before taking on conference foe Talladega College on Monday, January 23rd at 5:30p.m. on the Battlefield in Dent Hall.
