(Jacksonville, FL) The Dillard Bleu Devils led late, but were unable to hold on the lead and lost their GCAC Conference opener in heartbreaking fashion to Edward Waters College 69-63 in Jacksonville, Florida on Tuesday night.

The Bleu Devils (0-1, 0-11) squandered the lead late after leading for much of the second half. Both teams played superior defense throughout the game particular in the first half. Dillard would use their defense to make up for struggles on offense to keep the score close midway through the first half. Edward Waters(1-0, 6-4) maintained a lead of six points or less for much of the half. The Tigers went into the half up leading the Bleu Devils 32-28. 


Terry Church led the Bleu Devils in scoring in the first half with 13 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field and 2-for-2 from three-point range. Myron McGowan contributed 8 points at intermission. 

In the second half, five points by Terry Church and layup by Jordan Kilson gave Dillard a 41-36 lead, the largest of the game for the Bleu Devils with 13:57 remaining. The Bleu Devils' defense controlled and completely shut down the Tigers, prompting them to call timeout.  Edward Waters would come out of the timeout to force two straight turnovers and score three straight baskets to reclaim the lead 53-49. Terry Church's third three-pointer brought Dillard to within two points with just over five minutes left in the game. A fast break dunk by the Bleu Devils' Lance Theard would keep Dillard close at 62-60. Trailing by three with 29 seconds remaining, the Bleu Devils' Terry Church missed a three-pointer that would have tied the game for Dillard and Edward Waters survived for the victory.

Terry Church led the Bleu Devils with 24 points and 4 rebounds. Myron McGowan contributed 14 points for the Bleu Devils while Lance Theard chipped in with 10 points and 7 rebounds. 

Dillard will take on the SUNO Knights on Saturday January 7th at the Castle on the campus of Southern University at New Orleans. Due to the Saints playoff game, the Bleu Devils will tipoff versus SUNO at 3:00p.m.
