(New Orleans) The Dillard Lady Bleu Devils, fresh off a thrilling overtime victory over Rust College yesterday afternoon, were unable to withstand Langston College's strong inside play and lost the Lady Lions 55-42 at the Barn on the campus of Xavier University.
It was the Lady Bleu Devils' (1-3) second and final game of the Annual Xavier Invitational Tournament.
The Lady Bleu Devils had their work cut out for them from the outset against the powerful Langston College Lady Lions, who came into the game undefeated (7-0) this season and 29-6 record last season en route to a National NAIA Tournament appearance.
The game was a defensive struggle early in the first half between both teams, with Langston College using their superior size to gain the early advantage in the score. The Lady Bleu Devils fell behind 14-6, missing easy baskets that could have very well given them the lead. Langston College took a 16-9 lead with seven minutes left in the first half, prompting the Lady Bleu Devils to call timeout. The Lady Bleu Devils came out after the timeout executing their offense, but were unable to score the basketball.
The Lady Bleu Devils shot an ice-cold 20% from the field in the first half. Langston College pushed their lead to their largest of the first half at 27-16 and went into halftime up 29-18. Lauren Daniel led the Lady Bleu Devils at the break with 7 points. Jasmine Bradley grabbed 6 rebound for the Lady Bleu Devils is the first half. The Lady Bleu Devil defense held Langston College to 41% shooting in the first half, including 2-for-10 from behind the three-point arc.
In the second half, Langston College came out and scored the first seven points of the half, increasing their lead to 18. The Lady Lions began connecting from long range, while the Lady Bleu Devils continue to struggle offensively. Lady Bleu Devil Lauren Daniel hit a three-pointer with 2:51 remaining to cut the Lady Lions' lead to 13, but the Lady Bleu Devils were unable to get any closer than nine and Langston College held on for the victory.
Jazzmin Smith led the Lady Bleu Devils with 12 points. Smith also grabbed 6 rebounds. Jasmine Bradley had a game-high 13 rebounds for the Lady Bleu Devils.
The Lady Bleu Devils will now come home and prepare for their next game on Tuesday, November 29th versus Spring Hill College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30p.m. on the Battlefield in Dent Hall.
