New Orleans, LA -- The Lady Blue Devils defeated the Spring Hill Lady Badgers 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-17, 15-11) on Tuesday night in Dent Gymnasium.
The victory marks the first conference win since the program was reinstated following Hurricane Katrina. Second year head coach, Yolanda Brown, attributed the team's success to "knowing you can win". "During my pre-game speech, I told the girls that there is a difference between believing you can win and knowing you can win, " said Brown.
The Lady Blue Devils were down 2 games to 1 and losing in the fourth match 15-17. Keisha Smoke, a 5-7 outside hitter, led the Lady Blue Devils on a 10-0 run to win the match and force an overtime game. The Lady Blue Devils went down 0-4 but fought valiantly leading the team to a final victory. The victory was a total team effort. "We came together, played tough, and pulled it off... it feels great" said Smoke. Tawonna Cage led the team with 10 kills and Smoke chipped in 6 kills. Defensive Specialist, Banikah Jackson, added 14 digs. Jackson is currently leading the GCAC with 1.2 blocks per game.
The Lady Blue Devils move to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in conference which moves the Lady Blue Devils to fourth in conference play.
The Lady Blue Devils will play a double-header this week when they face-off against the Alabama State Lady Hornets at 7 pm in Dent Hall Gymnasium, Friday, October 10, 2008 and against the Talladega Lady Amistad Murals at 1 pm on Saturday, October 11, 2008.
