Destinee Showell signs scholarship award
New Orleans, LA - Destinee Showell is used to doing things fast.  The senior from Byron P. Steele High School (Cibolo, Texas) started running track at age eight and has been breaking records her entire high school career.  Now she's bringing her act to Dillard University, head coach Bobby Williams, Jr., announced today.

Competing for the Lady Knights varsity team since her freshman year, Showell has posted impressive performances.  This year, she broke the Harlandale Stadium record in the girls 100 meters with a time of 12.26.  Her personal best in the race is 12.04.  She also won the District 27-4A 100 race and helped her team advance to its second regional meet in a row, winning the 800 meter relay and placing second in the 1600.

Slowed by a knee injury her sophomore year, Showell recovered nicely as a junior, breaking the 100 meter school record for a second time (the first time was as a freshman), along with pacing her teammates to school best performances in the 4x2 and 4x4 relays.  Additionally, the Lady Knights were the first-ever Steele girls team to advance to any state championship.

"Destinee is a great young sprinter with a lot of upside," said Dillard head coach Bobby Williams, Jr.  "She should develop nicely on the collegiate level and really be a difference-maker."

Showell also competes in the long jump and broke the Steele school record as a freshman with a leap of 17 feet and one inch.  She has a grade point average of 3.05 and is undecided on a major.

Yesterday, Showell ran her fastest 800 meter relay split ever, 23 seconds flat, helping the Lady Knights to a first place finish (1:41.91) in the event and snagging third place overall at the Region IV-4A track championship.
