Brown comes to DU via Copperas Cove High School (Tx.), where she is rewriting the Lady Dawgs record book, having already set new single-season marks for hits (37), runs scored (28), RBI (48), home runs (11) and grand slams (four). She is batting .638, getting on base almost 69 percent of the time and she's also a threat on the base paths, stealing 22 bases so far, along with four doubles and five triples.
"This is what you call a star player," said Brown. "Shabanese is the type of player opponents fear - a deadly combination of athleticism and knowledge of the game. She makes teams adjust their game plan and her ability to knock the ball out of the park is a pitcher's worst nightmare."
Brown, who boasts a 94 percent fielding average, is a favorite to add a third all-district award to a resume that includes a first-team honor last season and the 16-4A Offensive Most Valuable Player honor in 2008, as well as numerous team awards. On top of that, she is gets it done in the classroom and is a member of the National Honor Society.
In their first season as a program, the Lady Bleu Devils are currently participating in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Championship Tournament. On choosing Dillard, Brown said, "Sometimes you walk onto teams with varsity members that have been there for three or four years and you're thinking you may have to try out for a new position, but everybody has to battle for their position because it's brand new."
Next year, Dillard softball will turn one and Brown will help them turn it up a notch when the new season begins.
