"The first softball team win in DU history; that was a big load off our shoulders!" said Brown. "The inaugural team deserved to have the first win, so I think it was fitting."
After defeating the Lady Hornets in game one, the Lady Bleu Devils allowed CC-S a 5-0 start in game two. Dillard got on the board with a run scored by sophomore Brittney Collura off a bad throw to home plate, in the bottom of the first. That play was followed by a run just before the inning wrapped up, leaving DU down 5-2.
With an 8-3 lead at the top of the third inning, the Lady Hornets batted in three runs with bases loaded to make the score 11-3. Dillard got the next batter out to go on offense.
In the bottom of the third, Dillard had a 3-run hit to close the gap, but was still down 6-11. Later, freshman Coco Edmunds batted in two runs to tie the game at 11-all. Next up was junior Jocelyn Macgruder, who brought home three Lady Bleu Devils to take a 3-run lead, 14-11. Dillard wrapped the inning with a 15-11 advantage.
Junior Jaquita Williams made back-to-back plays at first base to close out the top of the fourth inning. Katrina Doran, a sophomore catcher, got DU started with a homer (16-11) followed by a double by freshman Amber McCoy, who got batted in by classmate Faron Bradley to put the Lady Bleu Devils up 17-11. Macgruder closed out the inning with a home run for a final score of 19-11 and Dillard's first doubleheader win.
Brown said afterwards, "It's been a tough year. I'm just so excited that they actually dug in there, dug deep and pulled it out."
The women are now 2-19 on the season and will next play William Carey College in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action on Monday, April 19. Doubleheader times are 1 and 3 p.m., at LaSalle Park, located at 6600 Airline Drive in Metairie.
