New Orleans, LA - Men's basketball player Mico Sjekloca was named the first recipient of the Billy Ray Hobley Scholarship.  The $1000 award was presented at the 2nd annual Billy Ray Hobley Scholarship Gala on January 29, 2010.

A native of Cetinje, Montenegro, Sjekloca (pronounced SEE-ah-KO-cha, first name MEE-Cho) arrived at the Dillard campus in the fall of 2009, transferring from Feather River Junior College in Quincy, CA.  Although the sophomore faced challenges linguistically, he has excelled in the classroom and on the court.

"Mico has done an outstanding job," said Dillard Athletic Director Kiki Baker Barnes.  "He has worked really hard to acclimate himself to the academic demands of the University and the demands of being a scholar-athlete."

Mico, 6-7, is currently the starting forward for the Bleu Devils and is the leading rebounder, with 160, the leading shot blocker, with 22, and the second leading scorer, averaging 10.3 points per game.  He has a scoring percentage of 46.4.

Mico is majoring in sociology and aspires to play professionally in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The Billy Ray Hobley Scholarship Fund was was established on February 27, 2009, and created to honor the legacy of Billy Ray "Supertrotter" Hobley, who traveled the world as a Harlem Globetrotter and, as a  Dillard alumnus, was a cornerstone for the Dillard University Athletics Department.  For more information on donating to the Billy Ray Hobley Scholarship Fund, log onto the athletics website (below) or contact Bleu Devil Athletics at 504-816-4953.
