The women closed the first period with a 31-23 lead as Smith went 6 of 8 from the free throw line. That was the tale of the tape for the Lady Bleu Devils, who shot 87.5 percent (14/16) from the charity stripe in the first half. Gill and Smith had eight points each before the break.
In second half action, it was all DU and the women grabbed a 10-point lead (38-28) by 16:38 when Ariel Mitchell sank a three-pointer off a dime from Smith. The Lady Bleu Devils grabbed their largest lead around the 12 minute mark, 47-35, and would do so twice more before settling for the eight-point win.
Mitchell ended the night with nine points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Smith added a team-high eight rebounds with two assists. Gill also contributed three caroms and three assists. As a team, the women posted their second-highest three-point percentage of the season, shooting 46.2.
The Lady Knights had two players in double-figures, including Jessica Adams (15) and Tyesha Robinson (11). Jazzlyn Prince was the game's leading rebounder with nine.
On Saturday, February 20, the Lady Bleu Devils will make the cross-town trek to Xavier University of Louisiana for the 2010 Allstate Sugar Bowl Crosstown Classic. Tip off time is 5 p.m., at The Barn. The first place Gold Nuggets, on a 15-game win streak, clinched their first GCAC regular season championship since the 2004-05 season against Loyola, earlier tonight.
