WCC opened the game with a 10 point run, capped by back to back 3-pointers by Alisha Mason, on assists from Corissa Tillman. Dillard's Jazzmin Smith interrupted the relay, hitting a field goal at 15:13 and drawing a foul by Consuela Tucker. Smith converted the extra shot, giving DU its first points of the game to make the score 10-3.
The Lady Bleu Devils shot 50% (15 of 30) in the first half to work their way to a 38-38 tie, at the break.
In second half action, the Dillard women clung to the Lady Crusaders, until about the 10 minute mark. That's when DU's Syrena Edwards fouled Mason, sending her to the line for three shots. Knocking down the triad, WCC gained a two-point lead. A subsequent foul by Dillard's Guylene Nsiewe put Tucker at the charity stripe, next, and the Lady Crusaders went up by four.
With the DU offense sitting on an iceberg, William Carey took over and marked its biggest lead, 14 points, when Kate Hubbard dished to Tucker for a shot at 5:49, pushing the score to 63-49. Shooting just 5 of 32 shots in the final period, Dillard was unable to catch up.
Ariel Mitchell led the Lady Bleu Devils with 12 points, followed by Nsiewe with 10. J'Ashala Haynes, getting her first start of the season, finished with a team-high nine rebounds and chipped in five points.
Dillard travels to Jackson, Miss., on Saturday, February 6, to battle GCAC opponent Belhaven. The women tip off at 5 p.m., at Charles R. Rugg Arena.
