New Orleans, LA - The Lady Bleu Devils (8-8, 1-5) were close, but allowed the Loyola Wolfpack to claw its way to a 54-48 conference victory, Saturday evening at The Den.  The Loyola women (10-6, 4-2) are now in third place in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

Dillard played an excellent first half, executing its "clamp down defense" perfectly, resulting in 13 turnovers by Loyola.  The DU women also pulled down 22 rebounds, 14 on defense, helping them to a 26-17 lead after the first period.

Coming out of the break, the Lady Bleu Devils kept the pressure on the Wolfpack on both ends of the floor, along with a double-digit lead.  But starting at 16:20, Loyola put together an 11-0 run to trim the deficit to two points by the 12:42 mark.  Dillard was able to hold the Pack off until a foul by Jazzmin Smith sent Loyola's Trenese Smith to the line for two shots.  Converting both, she gave the Pack its first lead since the first half, 45-44.

With 3:18 remaining, Keiva Council went to the charity stripe for two shots and, making both, gave Loyola a lead (47-46) it would not relinquish.  The Lady Bleu Devils ran out of time and had to absorb a second consecutive GCAC loss.

Leading DU scorers were Jazzmin Smith, with 16 points, Ariel Mitchell had 10 points and J'Ashala Haynes added eight, with a team-high nine rebounds.  This was the first outing, since December 5, 2009, against Edward Waters that the team finished with 40 or more rebounds.  The women also matched their season high of 28 defensive rebounds.  Trenese Smith and Council led Loyola in scoring with 14 and 15 points, respectively.

The Lady Bleu Devils will be in GCAC action on Monday, January 25, taking on the Lady Knights of Southern University at New Orleans (8-4, 2-4).  Game time is 5:30 p.m. at The Castle.
