Dillard (7-1) was led in scoring by Ariel Mitchell (22), who played like woman a possessed in the first half, netting 15 points before the break. With her hot hand, it was all DU in the first period and the women never trailed. The Lady Bleu Devils took a 32-25 lead into the break.
The Lady Tigers returned in the second half with some offense from beyond the arch and lit Dillard up from outside with three 3-pointers in a row to get within two (41-43) around the ten minute mark. Mitchell would leave the game with 19 points in the second half, with a little over seven minutes remaining, due to an apparent injury.
Later, a lapse in the DU defense would lead to back-to-back layups for EWC's Ashley Hamm, who tied the game twice at 50-50 and 54-54. She also gave the Lady Tigers the go ahead bucket at 6:33, to make the score 56-54. But, the lead was short lived thanks to a feed from Lai'Ana Gill to Syrena Edwards for a 3-point shot at 4:04, to put the Lady Bleu Devils back on top, 62-61, and igniting the home crowd.
With just 40 seconds left to play, Mitchell returned to make three free throws in the waning moments to help seal the win and finish with 22 points for the night, along with five steals. Jazzmin Smith added 11 points. Gill and Jasmine Archie had six rebounds apiece.
For Edward Waters (3-6), Tieura Quick went 5-11 from three-point range for 24 points. Ebony Presha added 15 and five steals. Simone Smith was the leading rebounder with eight.
Dillard basketball returns to Dent Gym with a doubleheader on Friday, December 18. The women tip off against Southern Polytechnic at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men versus Life University at 7:30.
