Women's Basketball - Fri, Nov. 27, 2009
New Orleans, LA - Dillard women's basketball wrapped up day two of the Xavier Classic Tournament with a 21-point victory (76-55) over the Lady Steers of Texas College, Friday afternoon at The Barn.  It was the second time in less than a month that Dillard posted a win over Texas College, keeping them undefeated with a 6-0 record.

In first half action, the Lady Steers stayed close managing four ties before a field goal by Jazzmin Smith gave Dillard a one-point lead (29-28) at 5:11.  Moments later, a steal and bucket by Lai'Ana Gill put DU up by five (36-31) and Texas College called a timeout on the next possession.  The Lady Bleu Devils never relinquished the lead, but did allow TC to get within one only to hold them off for an eight point advantage, 43-35, at halftime. The Lady Steers were helped by a 90 percent free throw performance in the first half.

The second half was a stark contrast from the first as Dillard committed three turnovers and missed eight field goals in the first five minutes.  The Lady Steers had made a 7-0 run before a three-pointer by Lauren Daniel made the score 46-42, at the 15:00 mark.

Midway through the second half, Jessica Small hit a hot streak netting three field goals in a row to push Dillard's lead to 15, 63-48.  The Lady Bleu Devils never looked back.  Small finished with 15 points, followed by Ariel Mitchell with 13 and four steals, and Smith added 10.  Syrena Edwards was the leading rebounder with seven.  Gill finished with nine points and six boards.

Texas College (3-3) tried everything to get back into the game, including a full substitution at 11:34, but it did not work as Dillard clamped down on defense and forced turnovers on four consecutive TC possessions.  The Lady Steers would end the game with 28.

Leading all scorers was Texas College's British Thomas with 17 points.  She also had nine turnovers.  Elise Kea had 14 and eight rebounds, with Keyara Criner adding 13 points.

The Lady Bleu Devils will next be in action against Columbia College (Mo.) on Thursday, December 3, at 5:30 p.m., at Dent Gym.
