(New Orleans, La.) For the third straight year, the Dillard Bleu Devils (149 pts.) finished second at the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans. Edward Waters finished with a total of 303 points to claim its third straight title on the men's side while Southern University at New Orleans finished in third place with 120 points.
Junior Toren Arnold (JR/New Orleans, La.) led the way for Dillard with a first place finish in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:23.82 and earned a second place finish in both the men's 1,500 meter run as well as the men's 400 meter hurdles, posting times of 4:28.96 and 57.36 respectively. With a time of 2:02.10, Arnold finished third in the men's 800 meter run.
Both Bleu Devils 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams picked up third place finishes, posting times of 41.60 and 3:24.23 respectively. The 4x1 team, comprised of Quamel Sessoms (SO/Portsmouth, Va.), Tyrone Barrow (FR/New Orleans, La), Larry Trimble (SO/New Orleans, La.) and Artis McCoy (FR/Las Vegas, Nev.), qualified for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in May while the 4x4 team qualified in a previous meet earlier in the season.
In the field events, Sessoms picked up a first place finish in the men's long jump for the second year in a row, leaping a distance of 7.67 meters while senior Theodore Kemp (SR/Indianapolis, Ind.) finished second in the men's hammer throw, throwing a distance of 35.69 meters. Teammate Tavis Baptiste (FR) picked up a second place finish in the men's shot put, throwing a distance of 12.11 meters. Sessoms later finished third in the men's high jump with a distance of 1.72 meters while Joseph Caldwell finished third in the men's pole vault with a height of 3.34 meters.
